Four killed, 3 Injured After Crash Involving a City of Eden Vehicle, Duke Energy Contractors
Eden, NC – Four powerline workers died and three others were injured when a City of Eden dump truck struck a group of utility contractors on Thursday, April 24, 2025. The accident happened around 1:30 p.m. at the intersection of Church Street and Carroll Street in Eden.
What Happened
A city dump truck was traveling north on Carroll Street and failed to stop at the stop sign. The car entered the intersection and struck six workers from a local utility services company who were performing maintenance at the time. After hitting the workers, the vehicle continued and hit a bucket truck before coming to a stop in a nearby ditch.
Four of the workers were pronounced dead at the scene. The victims are:
- Douglas Garland Sides, 72, of Summerfield
- Madison Carter, 42, of Sandy Ridge
- William Evans, 35, of Randleman
- Matthew Lockwood, 30, of Winston-Salem

Two others, Hunter Carter, 24, of Reidsville, and Kevin Alexander, 34, of Eden, were airlifted to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. One other worker who was in the bucket truck at the time of the impact was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The dump truck driver, a 66-year-old Eden resident, had minor injuries.
The Cause
According to preliminary reports, the driver failed to stop at the stop sign. He has been charged with a stop sign violation and misdemeanor death by motor vehicle. There is no indication of impairment, but the investigation is ongoing to determine all contributing factors.
