4 Dead After Car Crashes Into Market in Connecticut
Waterbury, CT – A single-vehicle crash early Thursday morning claimed the lives of four people when a BMW sedan hit a corner store in Waterbury. The accident happened around 12:45 a.m. at the intersection of Cherry Street and Maple Avenue.
What Happened
According to Waterbury police, the BMW was traveling on Cherry Street when the driver lost control and slammed into the Hernandez Market, a local business at the corner of Cherry Street and Maple Avenue. The impact collapsed the front of the building’s exterior wall, exposing roof rafters and scattering debris across the sidewalk.
Firefighters arrived quickly on the scene. Three people in the vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene, and one was taken to the hospital, where they later died. No one was in the market at the time of the crash, so no additional victims.
The Cause
Preliminary investigation shows the driver lost control of the vehicle. Waterbury Police Chief Fernando Spagnolo stated that the BMW was not stolen and there are no indications of foul play. The cause of the crash is still under investigation; speed, road conditions, and mechanical failure are all being examined.
A neighbor captured the aftermath: the vehicle is on its roof, and firefighters are removing debris while trying to reach anyone who may be trapped inside.
