Deadly crash completely shuts down major Austin highway

Austin, TX – A fatal crash this morning shut down I-35 in both directions, causing major delays for commuters. The accident occurred on March 25, 2025, around 5:30 AM.

What Happened

According to authorities, the crash happened on I-35 near Exit 238 just north of downtown Austin. Multiple vehicles were involved, including a semi-truck and at least two passenger cars.

First responders arrived quickly and confirmed that one person was killed at the scene. Several others were injured and taken to nearby hospitals. Officials haven’t released the names of the victims yet.

Due to the severity of the crash, all lanes of I-35 were closed for several hours during rush hour.

The Cause

The cause is still under investigation, but early reports suggest speed and fog may have been a factor. Witnesses saw one of the vehicles swerve before the crash.

“I heard a loud boom and then I saw cars spinning out,” said a driver who was nearby. “It all happened so fast.”

Authorities are also looking into distracted driving, mechanical failure, and driver fatigue. Surveillance footage from cameras is being reviewed.

Community Comments

This crash has raised concerns about I-35 safety, which is notorious for traffic congestion and accidents.

“This stretch of I-35 is always bad, especially during rush hour,” said a local commuter. “People drive too fast, and accidents like this keep happening.”

Others were frustrated with the closure. “I was stuck in traffic for almost 2 hours,” another driver said. “It was a nightmare.”

Bottom Line:

As of 10:00 AM, some lanes have reopened, but expect delays throughout the day. Officials are advising drivers to use alternate routes and drive slowly in low visibility conditions.
